A Houston Family's First Trip to New York City: Tips and Experiences

New York City Adventure! 🗽🍎

Hey everyone! My family just got back from an awesome trip to NYC last week, and I'm so excited to share our experience with you!

Flight & Hotel: The Essentials ✈️🏨

  • We snagged a package deal on Expedia.com – flight and hotel for 3 days, 2 nights from Houston to NY for around $370 per person!
  • We flew United Airlines and stayed at the Intercontinental Times Square. Prices can definitely vary depending on when you book, so keep that in mind!
  • Staying near Times Square was super convenient and lively. Everything felt close by!

Getting Around: Transportation 🚕🚇

  • Uber from the airport to the hotel (and back) was about $70 total. With 4 of us, it worked out to around $17.50 per person – quick and easy!
  • Of course, you can also take the subway or bus from the airport to your hotel if you're looking for a budget-friendly option.
  • We booked a Big Bus hop-on hop-off tour on Expedia.com for a great deal – $65 per person per day (regular price is $85).
  • The bus tour has two routes: Downtown Loop and Uptown Loop. Tours run from 9am to the last bus at 5pm.
  • They announce each stop and point out the attractions. You can hop off, explore, take photos, and then catch the next bus (they come every 10-15 minutes!).
  • Our day looked like this: Times Square -> Korea Town -> Empire State Building -> Soho/ Chinatown/ Little Italy -> Brooklyn Bridge -> Wall Street -> World Trade Center (9/11 Memorial and Oculus, etc) -> Pier 56 -> Hudson Yards
  • Okay, real talk – as a first-timer, the NYC subway was a bit of a nightmare for me! 😬 I'm not sure I can recommend it.
  • Each ride cost over $3, I got lost multiple times, and swiping again just added up. Plus, my phone had no service underground, so checking maps was impossible.
  • I tried a few different subway lines, but none of them displayed the next stop like the trains in Houston do.
  • If you want to visit the Statue of Liberty, ferry tickets are around $25 per person.

Foodie Adventures: Where We Ate 🍜🌮

My family loves Asian food, so these are just a few of our favorites. It really depends on your personal taste!

  • I HIGHLY recommend Kin Ramen near Times Square. Seriously, the ramen is incredible. We also ordered a bunch of appetizers and side dishes. The service, food, and atmosphere were all fantastic!
  • We booked a buffet dinner cruise that cruised around NYC at night. Tickets were around $200 per person, from 6pm to 9pm. The food wasn't really my taste, and the boat was a bit old, so I'd say it's more of a "do it for the experience" thing.
  • Ding Tai Fung required reservations when we went. This place is amazing! The atmosphere and service were super impressive.
  • Other recommendations: Wooga (Korean food), Yum Yum Too (Thai food), Los Tacos No. 1
  • Most of these places cost around $30-50 per person.
  • Since we stayed near Times Square, all these places were close by, but you can always search Google for other tasty spots!
