Taipei, Taiwan: A Traveler's Review and Guide to the Land of Bubble Tea

Taipei, Taiwan: A Milk Tea Lover's Review!

Hey travel bugs! Ready for a quick trip to the land of bubble tea? I'm spilling all the details on Taipei, Taiwan, making it a super convenient stopover, especially for my peeps flying back to Vietnam. Since many flights from the US connect through Taiwan, why not make the most of it?

Getting There: Fly High!

  • Flights: Coming from the States? Score a "Multiple City" ticket and add Taiwan to your itinerary before heading to Vietnam (or back to the US). I flew roundtrip from Vietnam on China Airlines for around 6 million VND. Vietjet offers cheaper fares, but the flight times might not be as sweet.

Sweet Dreams: Where to Stay

  • Taipei Main Station Area: This is the heart of the action! It's a major metro hub for pretty much everything. Hotels, restaurants, bubble tea shops galore, and Ximending shopping district are all within easy reach.
  • Ximending & Taipei 101: If high-end shopping is your jam, this area is calling your name! Hotels here are a bit pricier than near Taipei Main Station. The Taipei Main Station area is more "local" and traditional, while Ximending feels modern and upscale.
  • Pro-Tip: Local hotels can be way more budget-friendly than big international chains. I stayed at Relax 3 (a local chain) and snagged 3 nights for $256 with unlimited bubble tea – yes, you read that right!

Getting Around: Metro Magic!

  • Public Transport: Taipei's metro and bus system is fantastic, punctual, and easy to navigate. Ditch the expensive taxis and explore the city like a local.
  • Airport Transfer: The metro from the airport to Taipei Main Station is only 150 NTD ($5), compared to a taxi ride costing 1,000 – 1,300 NTD.
  • EasyCard vs. Taipei Fun Pass: EasyCard is a reloadable card you can use for all transport. The Taipei Fun Pass offers unlimited travel for 1, 3, 5, or 7 days. I opted for the 3-day Fun Pass (440 NTD/$15-16) for simplicity.

Taipei Adventures: What to Do!

  1. Beitou Hot Springs: Relax and rejuvenate in this famous hot spring district! Take the metro to Beitou Station. Explore Xinbeitou Station, the Hot Spring Museum, and Thermal Valley. Don't forget to soak in a hot spring! You can choose public baths (super cheap, under $5) or private ones in hotels. Be aware that some public baths still follow the traditional nude bathing. I booked a private bath at GrandView resort for 2,500 NTD ($80 for 2 people).
  2. Tamsui: Explore this coastal town north of Beitou, easily accessible by metro. Tamsui Old Street near the station offers cheaper souvenirs and food than the night markets.
  3. Bitoujiao: Escape the city to this scenic coastal hiking spot! Since it requires multiple transfers by metro and bus, I recommend hiring a private driver for convenience. This stunning area is often called the "Mini Great Wall."
  4. Jiufen Old Street: Get lost in the charm of this hillside village, rumored to be the inspiration for Spirited Away. Stay overnight to experience its peaceful beauty without the daytime crowds.
  5. City Tour: Hit up Taipei's iconic landmarks, including Taipei 101 (skydeck tickets around $20), Liberty Square, Chang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and the National Palace Museum.
  6. Night Markets: A must-do in Taipei! I visited Shilin (shopping and food) and Raohe (more local, mostly food). Remember to bring cash!

Important Tips

  • Most attractions are free! Only the National Palace Museum and hot springs require admission.
  • Exchange currency at the airport. It's convenient for metro tickets and night market purchases. You can also buy a local SIM card (around 300 NTD/$10 for 5 days of 4G).
