Laos on a Budget: VTE - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang 6-Day DIY Adventure! 🇱🇦
Hey everyone! 👋 I'm writing this while waiting for my flight home, buzzing from an epic 6-day solo trip through Laos. Seriously, I hope my experience helps you plan an unforgettable adventure! Quick disclaimer: this is just my personal take – your mileage may vary! 😉
1️⃣ Getting Around: My Laos Transport Hacks ✈️ 🚗 🚄
- Flights: Flew round-trip SGN-VTE (easy peasy!).
- Vientiane Airport Transfer: Grab a bus (No. 44) or taxi (Loca or SMXanh apps are your friends!) to your hotel.
- Vientiane to Vang Vieng: Mini Van Mania! Why? Cheaper than the high-speed train (a bit!), door-to-door service (hotel pick-up & drop-off = no taxi hassles!), and the 11:30 AM departure lets you explore Vientiane in the morning without rushing. Klook, Bookaway, 12go.asia – all solid booking options.
- Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang: High-Speed Train FTW! Time is precious! Cut down the journey from a 4-5 hour bus ride to a breezy 2-hour train trip. Download the LCR app, sign up (you'll need a Lao SIM – more on that below!), book your tickets, and pay with your Visa.
- Luang Prabang Train Station to City Center: Shared cars are your best bet – 40k kip/person right outside the station.
- Luang Prabang to Vientiane: Domestic Flight is Key! Avoid another taxi scramble from the Vientiane train station. Plus, direct flights from Luang Prabang to SGN are rare and pricey. A domestic flight sets you up perfectly for your connecting flight.
- Local Transport: I'm a walker! Anything under 2km, I hoofed it. Loca or tuk-tuks for longer distances. For waterfall hikes and mountain climbs, I rented a motorbike. 🛵
2️⃣ Where I Crashed: Accommodation Hotspots 🛌
- Vientiane: Syri Guesthouse. Dorms & private rooms. I scored a Queen Room (B1) on Agoda for $27 (with a $5 cashback!). Super comfy bed, private bathroom, a living room (!), clean, spacious, and loads of windows. 1 min to tennis courts & restaurants, 5 mins to the night food market, and 20 mins to the clothing market & Starbucks.
- Vang Vieng: Bearlin Bungalow. 1.5km outside town = tranquility! Lush gardens, a mini-resort vibe, a pool, stunning mountain views...perfect for solo travelers, couples, and anyone seeking a chill getaway. Free shuttle from Vang Vieng center & to the train station! I booked a pool view bungalow on Agoda for around 1,850,000 kip/2 nights.
- Luang Prabang: Location is everything! Just find a place within your budget. The night & morning markets are right in the old town. Maybe book slightly away from the market to avoid the early morning noise (5 AM!). From hostels to luxury hotels, Luang Prabang has it all!
3️⃣ Money & SIM Cards: Get Connected & Spend Smart 💰 📱
- Money Exchange: Skip exchanging beforehand (unless you have to). Bring VND and your DEBIT Visa/Mastercard to withdraw cash from ATMs at the airport. 200k/person should cover your SIM & taxi. You'll find ATMs from Sacom, Vietin, and Vietcom with good rates and low fees. I withdrew just enough as I went along. ATMs are readily available in Laos cities.
- SIM Cards: After exiting the airport, turn right about 50m to find 5 SIM card vendors. Shop around! I grabbed a 10GB/5-day SIM for 69k kip. Activation was instant.
4️⃣ Eat, Play, Explore: My Laos Highlights 🍜 🎉 🏞️
- Vientiane: Night Markets are a mixed bag. The one near Chao Anouvong Park was super quiet (even on a Sunday!). The food market is decent, but small (30 stalls). BUT! Seek out the purple sweet potato fries – SO GOOD! Things start closing up around 9 PM. The next morning, I visited Patuxay, the COPE center, a temple, grabbed a Starbucks, and then headed to Vang Vieng.
- Vang Vieng: Outdoor adventure central! Nightlife is chill – a small night market that takes 10 mins to walk through. 2 nights is enough (unless you crave nature – then book a bungalow/camp near Blue Lagoon 3). Arrived in Vang Vieng at 2:30 PM, checked in, chilled by the pool. In the afternoon, I watched hot air balloons, caught the sunset, and walked across the old wooden bridges (cars and motorbikes only!). Experience the rickety old bridges (they might not be around forever!). Vang Vieng street food is delicious! Try the grilled chicken, grilled coconut cakes, and sticky rice with egg. Booked hot air balloon in the morning, rent a bike to Namxay viewpoint, and swim in Lagoon. Ziplining (250k kip) and kayaking (100k kip) available.
😍 Hot Air Balloon Review 😍: Morning flights are the way to go! Cooler air, stunning sunrise views, and the morning mist. Amazing VV is $135 (no transport); Above Lao ($145) is more professional and includes transport. Flights with Above Lao tend to stay up higher and longer. My 65-minute flight included a certificate, fruit, and champagne! Paragliding is best for sunsets. - Luang Prabang: Stroll around the old town, find a riverside spot for sunset drinks over the Mekong. Explore the night market for souvenirs, clothes, silk scarves, art, lanterns...then hit the food court. Don't forget the gelato! In the morning, you'll be able to see monks collecting alms, roam the morning market, eat delicious food, climb Mount Phousi, then head to Kuang Si Falls! On the way to the falls you can see Asian black bears being rescued. Kuang Si Falls is majestic, cool emerald green waters. At Carpe Diem have lunch (fish laab and chicken) and watch smaller water falls, or even swim! Rice Farm Cafe has the best iced lemonade, mint tea and fried spring rolls.
In the morning take a walk through the morning market, watch monks collect alms, admire the Wat.
