Tiger Sugar Hong Kong: Is It Worth the Hype?
During my time in Hong Kong, I stumbled upon a massive queue winding out from a tiny basement shop at Jardine's Bazaar in Causeway Bay. With a bold, golden tiger logo catching my eye, I decided to join the crowd to see what all the fuss was about at Tiger Sugar.
Originating from Taichung, Taiwan, Tiger Sugar is famous for its signature "Brown Sugar Boba Milk." The aesthetic is iconic: thick swirls of dark brown sugar syrup are painted onto the sides of a clear cup, creating a "tiger stripe" pattern before the fresh milk and boba are added. Holding it up to the light, it is undeniably photogenic—I couldn't resist taking a picture, either.
I waited about 5–10 minutes (a stroke of luck as I arrived early in the morning, avoiding the peak-hour rush), and I have to admit—it really was delicious. The boba pearls were large, soft, and chewy, while the brown sugar syrup offered a deep, balanced sweetness. The milk was rich and creamy, noticeably lacking that artificial, powdered creamer aftertaste. On a sweltering Hong Kong day, it was incredibly refreshing. I can certainly see why people used to wait for hours when it first opened.
However, to be honest: the portion size is quite small for the price—about 34 HKD. Furthermore, because the recipe is fixed, you cannot adjust the sugar or ice levels. If you aren't a fan of very sweet drinks, you might find it a bit intense after the first half. It is a fantastic treat, but perhaps not an everyday indulgence.
A few local tips for your visit:
- Language Barrier: The staff primarily speak Cantonese and have limited English, so simply pointing at the menu is the easiest way to order.
- Seating: The shop is tiny with no seating; it is strictly a "grab-and-go" experience meant for walking around the district.
- Timing: Arrive right when they open or before 11:00 AM to beat the lines.
- Navigation: Since it’s located in the basement of Jardine's Bazaar, it can be a bit tricky to find. Definitely check Google Maps before walking over from the Causeway Bay MTR station.
If you want to branch out, they offer new flavors like strawberry and strawberry mochi, but the classic brown sugar remains the undisputed star. Whether you've tried Tiger Sugar in other countries or this is your first time, the Hong Kong original stands out for its superior quality of fresh milk. It’s a "must-try" for your Hong Kong foodie bucket list—even if just for the experience alone.
