How to Successfully Apply for a China Visa on Your Own

A Guide to Securing Your China Tourist Visa: A Successful DIY Experience in HCMC

Navigating the visa application process can feel daunting, but it is entirely possible to handle it yourself. Here is a breakdown of our successful experience applying for a China tourist visa for two people in Ho Chi Minh City:

  • February 25, 2026: Submitted online application at 5:05 PM.
  • February 27, 2026: Received "Online Review Completed" status on the portal.
  • March 2, 2026: Submitted physical documents at the Chinese Consulate in HCMC.
  • March 6, 2026: Visa collection.

Thanks to the detailed guides shared by this community, we were able to get our visas approved on the first attempt. The most time-consuming part was carefully reading through the requirements, but preparation is key. Here are a few practical tips to help you streamline your application:

1. Proof of Residency: CT07 vs. Household Registration Book

My travel companion had a delay in obtaining the CT07 residence certificate from the local ward, so we used their provincial Household Registration Book instead. Although they reside in HCMC, their permanent registration is in Dong Nai. To prove residency in HCMC, we used a bank balance confirmation issued by an HCMC branch. For my application, I already had the CT07, so I used that as standard practice.

2. Proof of Financial Means: Savings Book vs. Balance Confirmation

While there is a common belief that HCMC applicants must provide a savings book with a balance over 50 million VND, we opted for a bank balance confirmation letter. The Consulate accepted this document without issue. While a savings book is the safest bet for 100% certainty, a bank balance confirmation is often sufficient.

3. Booking Flights and Hotels with "Pay Later" Options

For flight bookings, use the Vietnam Airlines website to select your flights and choose the "Pay Later" option. You will receive an email confirmation that works perfectly for your visa application. If you do not pay, the booking will automatically expire after 24 hours.

For hotel reservations, use the Booking.com app. Use the filters to select "Free Cancellation" and "Book Without Credit Card." This allows you to secure a booking for your application without immediate payment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Ensure that your flight dates, hotel booking dates, and your written travel itinerary are 100% consistent throughout your entire application. Consistency is vital for a smooth approval process. Good luck with your application!
