How to Navigate Shanghai Easily During Your Transit Layover

How to Get Around Shanghai During a Layover

Following my previous post on securing a free Shanghai transit visa, many of you asked for tips on getting from the airport into the city—specifically how to navigate the Maglev train versus the Metro. I’ve put together this quick guide to help those of you planning your next Shanghai layover.

1. The High-Speed Experience: Shanghai Maglev

The Maglev is the "coolest" way to reach the city. You’ll cover the 30km distance in just 8 minutes.

  • Route: Pudong International Airport to Longyang Road Station.
  • Price: 50 RMB (one-way) or 80 RMB (round-trip).
  • Perks for International Travelers:
    • Pre-booking via Klook: You can purchase vouchers on Klook using your Visa or Mastercard before you fly. Simply scan the QR code at the counter to exchange for a physical ticket.
    • On-site Payment: The Maglev ticket counters accept international Visa/Mastercard payments (unlike some local Metro kiosks).
  • Pro-Tip: Longyang Road Station is still about 15–20 minutes away from major central landmarks like The Bund. Once you arrive, you will need to transfer to the local Metro or take a taxi to reach the heart of the city.

2. Budget-Friendly & Direct: Metro Line 2

This is the best option if you are traveling light and heading straight to major areas like Lujiazui, Nanjing Road, or People’s Square.

  • Route: Runs directly from Pudong Airport deep into the city center.
  • Price: Very affordable, ranging from 3 to 9 RMB.
  • Payment Challenges with Visa/Mastercard:
    • Automated ticket machines at Metro stations often do not accept international credit cards (they primarily take cash or Alipay/WeChat Pay).
    • The Solution: I recommend purchasing a "Shanghai Travel Card" or Metro pass in advance via Klook. Alternatively, visit the Service Center at the airport station to inquire about purchasing tickets with your card.
    • Contactless Payments: While some newer machines support contactless Visa/Mastercard, they aren't always reliable with foreign-issued cards. It’s wise to carry a few different cards as a backup.

3. Essential Tips for a Seamless Trip

  • Leverage Klook: Booking your Maglev ticket in advance via Klook is the most reliable way to use your Visa/Mastercard without worrying about exchange rates or digital wallets as soon as you land.
  • Cash is Your "Plan B": Even if you prefer cards, keep 200–500 RMB in cash on you. If a card terminal fails at a Metro station, cash will save your day.
  • The Optimal Route: Take the Maglev (booked via Klook) from the airport to Longyang Road, then hail a taxi or use a ride-hailing app to reach your hotel. This is much more comfortable if you are traveling with heavy luggage.
  • Watch the Clock: The Maglev only runs until approximately 21:40. If your flight lands late at night, your only options will be the Metro Line 2 or a taxi.
  • Digital Wallets: I highly recommend setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive. Once you get the hang of them, they make navigating Shanghai incredibly easy.
