Did You Know? You Can Still Get an Australian Passport Stamp
While Australia has largely moved to a paperless border system, many travelers are unaware that you can still request a physical stamp in your passport if you wish to keep it as a travel memento.
Even if you have processed your entry or exit through the automated SmartGate system, you can still approach an officer from the Australian Border Force (ABF) at the help desk or the service counter located just past the immigration area.
How to Request Your Stamp
Simply ask the officer politely: "Can I have a stamp, please?" If they ask for your reasoning, you can provide a simple explanation:
- For a souvenir: "I’d love to have the stamp as a travel memento."
- For official records: "I would like to keep the stamp as a record of my travel movements for future visa applications."
In most cases, the ABF officers are happy to assist, provided the operational conditions allow for it.
Important Considerations
Please note that obtaining a stamp is not always guaranteed. ABF officers may decline your request due to various operational factors, including:
- High passenger volumes at the airport.
- Operational or technical constraints at the time of your request.
- The physical stamp ink or equipment being unavailable.
If you require official proof of your entry or exit for visa purposes or other legal requirements, you do not need a passport stamp. You can easily request an official Travel Movement Record directly through the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) website.
