A Perfect Day Trip from Chongqing: Exploring the Wulong Karst

If your China itinerary doesn’t include the bustling crowds of Zhangjiajie or Yangshuo but you are still craving spectacular natural landscapes, Wulong is your answer.

Located just a short journey from Chongqing, the Wulong Karst Geological Park is home to the famous Three Natural Bridges. These are massive, naturally formed limestone arches towering over deep gorges, with ancient-style dwellings tucked away at the valley floor.

How to Get There

The easiest way to reach Wulong is by train from Chongqing. High-speed trains take approximately 40–50 minutes, while standard trains take around two hours; they depart from different stations, so be sure to check your booking. You can easily purchase tickets via Trip.com.

From Wulong Station, it is a 30-minute taxi ride to the park entrance. Tickets can also be booked through Trip.com, which usually includes the cost of the panoramic elevator and shuttle buses that move you between various locations within the park.

Exploring the Three Natural Bridges

Once you enter, you will find yourself at the top of the gorge before descending via a spectacular glass elevator nestled between the cliffs. From there, you will enjoy a leisurely walk along the canyon floor. The paths are flat and well-maintained, with no major steep climbs or descents. The entire loop typically takes about two hours, and the navigation is straightforward as there is essentially only one main trail to follow.

Beyond the Bridges: The Longshuixia Fissure

After exiting the main gorge, you can either take a bus back to the tourist center or head to the Longshuixia Fissure. This offers a completely different experience, featuring hidden caves, rushing waterfalls, and narrow passageways between sheer rock walls. Be sure to purchase a combined ticket in advance if you wish to explore both routes.

Travel Tips

  • Timing: One day is perfectly sufficient to see both locations, but we highly recommend leaving early in the morning.
  • Park Hours: The park is open from 08:30 to 17:00.
  • More to See: Beyond the Three Natural Bridges, the Wulong area boasts the massive Furong Cave, the stunning Fairy Mountain with its alpine meadows, and several other scenic trails.
  • Stay Longer: If you prefer a slower pace, consider booking an overnight stay at one of the many nature-inspired hotels in the Wulong region.
