Ueno Tokyo: Your First-Timer's Guide to 7 Train Stations

Ueno TOKYO | Summary of train stations in the Ueno area – Guide for first-time travelers to Japan, no worries about getting lost

Ad believes that the Ueno area is one of the first areas in Tokyo that many Thai tourists (and international tourists) choose as a "base" to travel around Tokyo and surrounding areas.

But many people may not know that this area not only has one train station, but up to 7 different stations in the same area. Each station has different lines, different operating companies, but all are around Ameyoko market. Just pin the wrong station or enter the wrong station and you can get lost as much as at major stations.

The Ueno area has underground passages connecting all stations to each other, but if walking on the surface and pinning the correct station on Google Maps, it's not too difficult. This article will briefly summarize for beginners: where each station is located and which lines it serves.

🔸 Keisei Ueno Station

Starting station of Keisei company.

Anyone going to Narita Airport by Keisei Skyliner ✈️ must board/get off at this station.

  • Station is underground, south of Ueno Park
  • Can walk to JR Ueno station in about 3 minutes

🔸 Ueno Station (JR)

Largest station in the area, operated by JR East.

Serves from regular trains to Shinkansen.

  • Station is east of Ueno Park
  • North of Ameyoko market

  • From JR Ueno station, you can go to:
  • Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Akihabara, Shinagawa, Tokyo Station – JR Yamanote Line
  • Tohoku area – Tohoku / Yamagata / Akita Shinkansen

  • Nagano, Karuizawa, Kanazawa, Toyama – Hokuriku Shinkansen

⚠️ Note: Tokaido Shinkansen (to Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya) does not pass through this station.

If you want to take that line, take JR Yamanote Line from Ueno to Tokyo Station, takes about 10 minutes.
