Paris's Richelieu Library Oval Room: Beauty and Brains

Does a Library Really Need to Be This Stunning?

Does a library really need to be *this* beautiful? 😆

The Oval Room (Salle Ovale) in Paris's Richelieu Library is one of those free, open-to-all spots where anyone can read books, dig into research materials, browse rare editions, or even flip through comics—there's a huge collection of BD comics right here. Or, let's be real, just pop in for some epic photos. 😅

True to its name, this oval-shaped gem might not pack the political punch of its "sibling" room across the ocean in the White House, but it's one of two iconic spaces symbolizing the power of knowledge, education, and preservation at the Richelieu Library—and for France as a whole.

Architect Jean-Louis Pascal cleverly topped the supporting columns with Acanthus leaves under the dome, surrounded by 16 stained-glass windows etched with the names of humanity's great "knowledge cities." It's like a quiet promise that wisdom will endure forever in this space.

P.S.: Somewhere in the Richelieu Library grounds, there's another reading room that's older and way more famous—the Labrouste Room. Sadly, you need a membership card and to be in a Master's program or higher to get in.
