Navigating Payments in Europe: Cash, Cards, or Apps?

Hello everyone!

Traveling through Europe is an amazing experience. But figuring out the best way to pay for things can be tricky. Should you rely on cash, swipe your card, or use a mobile app? After several trips, I've gathered some insights that I hope will be helpful!

Credit and Debit Cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted throughout Europe, from supermarkets and restaurants to hotels and shops. Using cards is generally safe since you don't have to carry large amounts of cash. If you lose your card, you can simply call to block it. Plus, cards are convenient for paying for larger expenses like hotel bookings, train tickets, and valuable purchases.

Important Considerations:

  • Most cards in Europe use Chip & PIN technology, so make sure your card has a chip.
  • Currency conversion fees: Check with your bank beforehand. When paying, if the machine asks whether you want to pay in EUR or your home currency, ALWAYS CHOOSE EUR (or the local currency of that country)! Selecting your home currency often results in hidden conversion fees (usually 3–5%).

Cash

While most places accept cards, it's still wise to carry some cash (around €50–€200). You might need it for public restrooms, purchases at street markets, food trucks, or for bus/metro tickets in smaller towns.

Tips:

  • Avoid carrying excessive amounts of cash and keep some small change handy for minor expenses.
  • Exchanging currency before you go can often get you better rates than at the airport.
  • Alternatively, withdraw some cash from ATMs at major banks (avoid private ATMs as they usually charge higher fees!).

Mobile Payment Apps

Apple Pay and Google Pay are becoming increasingly popular. If you have a smartphone and a compatible card, simply set it up and start using it. It's very convenient.

Paypal is generally used for online payments and less frequently in physical stores.

Wishing you all safe and enjoyable travels in Europe!
