Hong Kong Airport Arrival & Octopus Card Guide

Navigating Arrival

Here's a breakdown for first-timers on arrival procedures and Octopus card pick-up/return at Hong Kong Airport.

1. Immigration

Preparation is key for smooth immigration.

  • Prepare your documents. Have digital copies or printouts ready: Approved visa, hotel booking confirmation showing payment, and return flight ticket.
  • Arrival Card: The flight attendant will distribute a small arrival card (A6 size). Fill it out with basic information; don't hesitate to ask for help if needed. If you miss filling it on the flight, arrival cards and pens are available near the security check, but the pens might be unreliable.
  • The immigration officer keeps the top copy and returns the bottom copy to you. Keep this slip safe; you will need it for departure. It's advisable to keep it with your passport in case of unexpected situations. You'll also receive a small leaflet to clip (not staple or tape) with your passport for potential visa applications later, since it won't be collected.

Immigration Process

Thankfully, both my arrival and departure were quick. Dress appropriately for a smoother experience.

2. Octopus Card Pick-Up at Counter A13

My booking indicated pick-up and return at Counter A13, but lacked detailed instructions. Upon arrival in the Arrival Hall, refer to the airport map provided below. Counter A13 is to the left of the main exit. The bus terminal is on the right. Some bus routes offer direct service to hotels.

3. Octopus Card Return at Counter A13

The airport bus dropped me off at Terminal 1, initially on Level 7. Counter A13 is located on Level 5 (Arrival Hall). Knowing your current floor is key for navigation. Locate Level 5 and consult the airport map, like you did during pick up.

4. Departure Security

  • The departure process involves two security checkpoints before and after baggage scanning. Both require your passport and boarding pass. The second checkpoint requires the A6 arrival slip.

5. Gate Navigation

The airport has over 230 gates within Terminal 1. Gates 1-39 are within walking distance on Level 6. For gates 40 and beyond, take an escalator down two levels and transfer to the MTR. Refer to MTR instructions for navigation.

6. Airport Construction

The airport is still under construction. Currently, only Terminal 1 is operational. Things may change, so keep an eye out for updates.

Purchasing an Octopus Card

Octopus cards can be purchased and topped up at ATM-like machines located to the left of Counter A13.
